III. 9-11 JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH: ITS RELATIONSHIP TO JEW & GENTILE
A. 9:1-13 RIGHTEOUSNESS REJECTED BY ISRAEL
a. 9:1-2 PAUL’S SORROW: REJECTION OF RIGHTEOUSNESS BY HIS PEOPLE

f. 9:8 GOD’S CHILDREN: OF PROMISE – NOT OF FLESH

That is, the children of the flesh – they are not children of :God;

but the children of the promise are reckoned for a seed.
g. 9:9 ISAAC: FULFILMENT OF GOD’S PROMISE

h. 9:10-12 ELECTION FULFILLED IN JACOB AS WELL AS IN ISAAC

10 And not only so; but Rebecca also having conceived by one, by our father :Isaac –

NOTE: Do you find it difficult to follow Paul’s reasoning from the Scriptures? Cheer up – the apostle Peter did also! Here are his words on this – “And account that the longsuffering of our :Lord is salvation; even as our beloved :brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given him, wrote you; 16 as also in all hisletters, speaking in them of these things; wherein are some hard to be understood, which the unlearned and unstedfast wrest, as also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction” (2 Peter 3:15-16).
Now – Thatis quite a word! “Unlearned” and “unstedfast” are two descriptions the Apostle Peter gives to people who misuse the scriptures! And – such people are inthe churches – even Evangelicalchurches.
So how does this fit in with Romans 9-11? There are those who read these 3 chapters and reason them completely away as being irrelevant to the church. They completelymiss the warning of the apostle Paul in Chapter 11. Israel has notbeen completely rejected by God, and all His blessings and privileges transferred to the church! “Replacement theology” such as held by many in Reformation movements, in British Israel and Islam – is completelyuntenable in the light of careful reading of this section of scripture by Paul.
Then too we must bewareof so-called evangelicals, who reject as inspired those letters of Paul that contain teachings that run counter to their convictions. When such occurs, both God and Paul are for them, in jeopardy. But for those who understand and accept the discoveries of Ivan Panin, such questioning by the doubters holds no water. Billy Bray of earlier centuries said – “Down with the doubters, and upwith the shouters!” Smith Wigglesworth challenged such – “Do you believe? Can you shout?”
Finally, look at Romans 9:3-5a, and see the 8 amazing blessings given to Israelites, and which we who are grafted in share: (l) the adoption, (2) the glory, (3) the covenants, (4) the giving of the law (Torah), (5) the worship, (6) the promises, (7) the fathers, (8) and Christ, the Messiah son of man and Israeli after the flesh.
Note especially the firstblessing the Holy Spirit has Paul point out. We in the Western world have difficulty understanding the significance of adoptionfrom the Biblical viewpoint. It is not adopting a child from outside one’s family! Rather, it is training a son under overseers of the father. When he has mastered the various departments of his father’s business, the overseers then inform the father: “Your son has mastered the various aspects of your business. He is now ready to be adopted. Your business will then become “Father & Son” – and we will then be under your Son as well as under you.
And applying Biblical adoption – we see that to be born again makes us a true son of Heavenly Father, and the Spirit of God in our heart leads us to accurately say, “Abba, Father.”
But – we are not yet adopted! Jesus told his apostles to make disciplesfrom among all nations. To be discipledaccording to all the commandments of the Lord in the New Covenant – qualifies us for spiritual adoptionto our Heavenly Father.
There are only 5 references to adoption in the entire New Testament. Here they are for your ardent research. Later on we’ll put out the Greek Word Study on these remarkable 5 references. The “placing” of a “son” is the literal meaning of Bible adoption:
